Retrospective Analysis of Contact Lens-Related Keratitis Diagnosed at the Tertiary Referral Center

Abstract

|
Purpose: We attempted to analyze the clinical feature of contact lens-induced keratitis cases diagnosed in the tertiary referral center.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed contact lens-related keratitis cases diagnosed in the Department of Ophthalmology between 2010 and 2013. Clinical information including age and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at the time diagnosed, the type of contact lens used, corneal scraping culture result, and post-treatment BCVA were investigated.
Results: 40 cases of contact lens-related keratitis (3.1%) were found out of 1286 keratitis cases. The patient age was 22.3 ± 8.0 year-old and 16 extended wear soft lens user (40%), 10 cosmetic color lens users (25%) were found. The corneal scraping culture was performed in 20 out of 40 contact lens-related cases, and 11 cases (55%) showed a causative microorganism, revealing that Pseudomonas aeruginosa (36.3%) was the most common pathogen. The BCVA was 0.50 ± 0.70 and 0.18 ± 0.30 at pre- and post-treatment, respectively, which was a significant improvement in BCVA (p = 0.002).
Conclusions: A 3-year retrospective chart review of keratits revealed 40 contact lens-related keratitis cases out of 1,286 keratitis cases. The visual acuity significantly improved after topical antibiotics administration.
